San Diego features the novelty of a two-nation vacation destination, with Tijuana located just 17 miles from downtown San Diego. Tijuana is one of the most widely visited cites in Mexico, with more than 50 million border crossings each year.

Traveling to Mexico is easy on the San Diego Trolley, a light-rail trolley system that runs from downtown San Diego to the Mexican border for just $2.25 each way. Another option is to park on the U.S. side and simply walk across the border. Mexican insurance is recommended for those who want to drive in Tijuana, with many insurance agencies located on both sides of the border.

When returning across the United States border within 72 hours, U.S. citizens may be required to show proof of citizenship; U.S. resident aliens must show a resident alien identification card; and foreign nationals will be required to show a passport, or in many cases a U.S. visa.

The Tijuana Tourism & Convention Bureau maintains three information booths. In Tijuana, located to the right after entering Mexico through the San Ysidro border (Monday - Friday from 8am to 9pm, Saturday from 8am to 10pm, Sunday from 8am to 7pm); at the Otay border crossing, located to the right after entering Mexico (9am to 4pm daily); and in downtown Tijuana, located on Third and Revolucion (9am to 5pm daily). The Tijuana Chamber of Commerce also has a booth in downtown Tijuana, located at First and Revolucion (9am to 7pm daily).

Tijuana is a duty-free zone, which makes the city a shopping paradise. In addition to the lowered peso, which can be obtained at any bank or money exchange location, bargain hunters can pay for items with U.S. currency, traveler's checks and major credit cards. U.S. residents may return home with up to $400 worth of merchandise, including one liter of alcoholic beverages (providing person is over 21), 50 non-Cuban cigars and 200 cigarettes.

Food is another favorite attraction in Tijuana, where many restaurants dish up fine Mexican and continental cuisine at reasonable prices. Visitors can taste the flavor of Mexico at a myriad of restaurants along Tijuana's major streets - Avenida Revolucion, Caliente Blvd., and Paseo de los Heroes - as well as within popular attractions and at seafood specialty restaurants along the Baja coast.

Visitors can get a glimpse of Mexico's heritage at the Tijuana Cultural Center, which also features a space theater, a performing arts theater, a museum, restaurant and more. For those who want to attend a traditional Mexican festivity, the bullfights are held on Sundays at 4:30pm from May through October. A bullring in downtown Tijuana on Caliente Blvd. and one on Tijuana's beachfront both serve as a great venue for the event. These are just some of the options available in this intriguing city.

For more information on visiting Tijuana, write to the Tijuana Tourism & Convention Bureau, P.O. Box 434523, San Diego, CA 92143-4523 or call 011 52 66/84-0537.
