Located in downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter is where the city's food, fun, culture and entertainment all converge into one place, offering more than 80 restaurants, clubs, theaters and galleries. This 16½-block historic neighborhood recreates the spirit of the19th-century through the preservation of Victorian style buildings.
The Gaslamp Quarter was literally named for the gas lamps that glowed here in the late 19th century. Visitors can take walking tours of the district, which offer an historical perspective and an updated look at the new developments of San Diego's most celebrated neighborhood. Discover how the Quarter was built and visit its oldest surviving structure, the William Heath Davis House (1850). Learn where and how the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp operated three gambling halls; and walk past the stone facades of the numerous historic buildings restored from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Gaslamp Quarter is where locals and visitors alike come to blow off a little steam and enjoy good food and a booming nightlife. Within walking distance are about 70 restaurants, offering dishes from around the world, including Italian, French, Spanish, Greek, Chinese, Mexican and California cuisine. Visitors can also take advantage of the many pubs offering happy hour, the blues, R&B and jazz at clubs like Croce's (yes, Jim Croce) as well as several coffee houses.
The Gaslamp Quarter is also adjacent to the renowned Horton Plaza shopping center, located between Broadway and G Street, and First and Fourth Avenues.
